Volunteers play a vital role in the management and monitoring of New Hampshire's estuaries. Several NHEP partners offer opportunities for interested citizens to participate directly in efforts to fulfill the objectives of the NHEP Management Plan (.pdf/8.5MB) and improve the quality of the state's estuaries. Each year, hundreds of volunteers assist with shoreline cleanups, research, data collection, education, planning, and numerous other community-based efforts.

The Great Bay Coast Watch was founded in 1990 and is supported by UNH Cooperative Extension and NH Sea Grant. The GBCW is a volunteer organization whose mission is to protect New Hampshire's coastal waters through water quality monitoring, education, and outreach. Volunteers include teachers and students, retirees, shoreline property owners and other concerned citizens. Since 1990 GBCW has expanded its long-term water quality monitoring coverage from seven to twenty-one sites, plus added six sites for phytoplankton surveying.
